The tax filing deadline is just 12 days away. Have you reviewed your tax return? Will you be filing on time or going on extension?
If you have not yet reviewed your tax return, looked at every number and every check box then NOW is the time to do it. Every year the IRS publishes statistics about how many taxpayers leave money on the table by not checking just a few checkboxes. The numbers are staggering. Dont be a statistic! If you have any questions or concerns, get answers. Ask your tax preparer. Ask another tax preparer. This is your money so treat it with the respect it deserves.
Then, once you are confident that your tax return is accurate, go ahead and file. There is no intrinsic benefit in going on extension. All payments are due by April 18th. An extension is an extension of time to file and NOT an extension of time to pay. Pay what you owe by April 18th. If you dont have the funds to pay, go to the IRS website and set up a payment plan. They have made it super easy to do and the interest rates are much much lower than any credit card or bank loan.
Extensions are great tools for taxpayers who have found an issue in their draft return that needs to be resolved that may take some time or for taxpayers who are still waiting for documents to come in.
