Underwhelmed by your tax preparer? Now is the time to start interviewing tax professionals to find someone who better meets your needs.
Remember, not all tax preparers are created equal. Most have a CPA or EA license but styles and pricing vary greatly. In my opinion, having advised business owners for over 25 years, is that you find a tax advisor who not only fits within your budget but also understands who you are and what you need. Someone that you feel comfortable talking with as there wil be times when you need to have difficult conversations about money and taxes and often, life!
When interviewing for your next tax advisor, make sure that you don’t just ask about the price. AVOID a tax advisor who talks ONLY about themselves and insists that they will get you tax refunds. A GREAT advisor will ask more about YOU and talk less about themselves.
Meet via zoom or in person and ask :
- Why should I choose to trust you with my money?
- What can I expect by way of communication – do you communicate via calls, text or emails?
- What response time can I expect on my requests?
- Ask for 2 references – call the clients and ask questions.
Don’t be shy, this is your hard earned money and you need to be completely comfortable that you are in trusted hands.
