It is May. Your tax return was timely filed and yet your tax refund has not yet arrived in your bank account. Hmnn. Now what?
Before you call your tax advisor, to go the IRS website and click on Where’s my Refund. The system will ask for your social security number, your filing status and the amount of the refund you are expecting. Then voila, you will find the information you are looking for. Either you will see the date the deposit was made or will be made and in the event that there is an issue with the refund, a notice to that effect will show on the screen. Remember, refunds take longer if you paper filed your tax return. Efiled returns generally see quicker refunds.
If there is any sort of problem with your refund such as your return needing extra time for processing or confirmaton of information needed, this is when you may want to reach out to your tax advisor. Sometimes returns get stuck in the IRS world of extra processing and we need to call, ask for status and request things be moved along. Always be kind and polite when calling the IRS! I have had many an issue resolved by a helpful phone agent.
